Rocky start

A few days have passed since the release of the german version. Unfortunately there were still some bugs and glitches
in the first playable version because the beta testing phase didn’t go quite as planned. Since Skolios is a game that changes by the players choices there are a lot of eventualities to consider. That being said, there might be more changes coming for the game before the work on an english version is going to start. Still – the first impressions by players were quite positive and other developers gave some good and helpful feedback to make the game a better experience.

Release of the german version / Veröffentlichung der deutschen Version

Today is a special day. Today is the release of the first finished version of „Skolios“. A long journey ends that started back in 2013. Since the game is developed in german, the first playable version is completly in german, too.

Ah, hier noch ein Trailer.

Still alive?

To answer the question above first: Yes. This project and it’s developer (me) are still alive. You didn’t expect that, did you? There was a time when I felt like sharing every single progress of my projects but either I got lazy or just changed in that manner so I don’t do that anymore really.

So what’s the status? Actually I can tell you I’ve already created the very last scene for this game (doesn’t include the credits, just the last ingame moment).
And I’m quite happy with that so far. Does that mean it’s almost done? Well… no.

What I did to not get stuck was working out of order. So I created different areas I had in my mind, no matter when they appear in the game. By doing so I’m done with most of the map-work for Skolios. I still got a few small areas to create and edit some of the already existing ones. Music and sounddesign are also almost complete, I’ve recorded a lot the ingame sounds myself or used free sound effects and had a lot of fun editing them and create dark and crazy soundscapes.

My biggest issue yet are the gameplay mechanics. Gameplay is what makes a game fun to play. Even though Skolios isn’t supposed to be a „fun to play“-game, I still don’t want people to get bored while playing this. I don’t want it to be a walking simulator like a lot of 3D indie games used to be.
There is no combat in Skolios. There are enemy-encounters, quick-time events and some puzzles to solve and I really struggle with creating interesting story related puzzles … which is the reason why creating the gameplay mechanics is still the main issue for me.
I don’t want to cut those out though because I sometimes like to think a little bit while playing a horror game. And not just what the story might be all about.

So… how are we doing as a percentage? I think this project might be 80 % done.
Perhaps even more, I can’t really tell. What matters is that this is still very much alive and I hope you might be able to play it very soon.

(Even though it’s really difficult to work on something horror related during summer…)

Lost Data

It’s been a while since I’ve posted something about this project.
No, it’s not dead yet. I was quite busy recently, moved to a new home, had several
cosplay events and didn’t… work that much at all on this game during summer since I don’t get myself motivated for creepy stuff if it’s bright, hot and sunny every day.
BUT(!) I’m still on it and changed a few already existing things for the better.
I also managed to finish a few complex ingame encounters I worked on quite a while.

Sadly… a lot of that progress is lost since I decided to move my project files from my external hard drive to my new computer. For some reason… a lot of the progress of the last few months just… dissapeared and I have no idea why. I tried to get some of original data back but that restorage-program destroyed the RPG-Maker database of my project so… it’s not completly lost but still means that I have to create a lot of stuff again that I’ve already finished a while ago.

So… I’m sorry to post some bad news but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna give up, I’ve invested way too much time in this already to just cancel it.
But it means that I need… even more time now.
People like to ask how much of the entire game is done already.
I would say it’s at about 50 % now.

Skolios at the „Pixelpokal“

20190420_141901
Last saturday there was an event called „Pixelpokal“ in the city of Hanover.
Lots of gamers were coming together to meet, play against each other in a tournament and to have a good time. Since it’s an videogame related event, I decided to introduce my rpg-maker game „Skolios“ to a live audience. Some people were playing and testing a short part of the game and gave me some really good and helpful feedback so I’m now motivated to go on with that project.
